During The NATSO Show 2013 in Savannah, Ga., Red Eye Radio (formerly called Midnight Trucking Radio) interviewed dozens of truckstop and travel plaza operators along with industry suppliers and experts about the industry’s top issues and trends.
Red Eye Radio host Eric Harley discussed several industry issues CEO Lisa Mullings, NATSO Chairman Tom Heinz, including highway funding. “Truckers spend a lot of time and fuel on the road in congestion and traffic. It is something that lawmakers have not taken action on quickly enough,” Mullings said. “The tolling issue is a terrible issue for truckers because it is a double taxation.”
Heinz told Harley, “Most of the members are of the opinion that the best way and fairest way to continue funding our highways is with a higher fuel tax. It is important that it is done at the federal level so we maintain some parity between the states.”
Harley also sat down with independent operator and anti-tolling advocate Rex Davis. Davis has worked extensively to block tolling initiatives on I-95 in Virginia. Davis explained that he did not oppose tolling for new capacity. He explained, “We’re saying, 95 in Virginia is an existing road in Virginia and should not be tolled.”
The broadcasts also include interviews with Mike Lombardi of TravelCenters of America, Ernie Brame of Kenly 95 and Delia Moon Meier of Iowa 80 Group. Industry suppliers featured on the program include KSG Distributing, Michelin, Top Dawg Electronics, CAT Scale, Clean Energy and Terra Environmental Technologies along with more than a dozen others.
